HSBC India has always risen to the occasion and contributed relief as well as provided rehabilitation assistance during natural disasters, such as Gujarat earthquake, the Tsunami tragedy, Mumbai’s floods and bomb blasts. Employees have whole–heartedly participated in the bank’s relief and rehabilitation activities through donations and volunteering.
Tsunami Rehabilitation
In December 2004, when Tsunami struck the Indian coast and numerous islands in the Indian ocean taking away lives, livelihoods and dreams of many. HSBC India rose to the occasion and helped in rehabilitation of the area affected by tsunami by partnering with different NGOs.
The HSBC Tsunami Rebuild Programme has contributed Rs 25 million to 8 NGOs working in the areas of community health and housing, reconstruction of schools, livelihood restoration and economic recovery and reef ecosystem conservation. Additionally, HSBC has also donated to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. Apart from contributions made by staff, customers, HSBC and HSBC Group companies, HSBC has participated in the Mumbai Marathon 2005 to raise funds for tsunami rehabilitation and also organised a charity dinner in Mumbai comprising auction of sports memorabilia and a corporate invitational golf tournament in Delhi. HSBC Securities and Capital Markets (HSCI) also donated a day's trading revenue.
Spirit of Mumbai
HSCI collected INR 1.25 crores on its Charity Day on 18Jul06 to help various initiatives for Mumbai in the aftermath of the blasts. HSBC Holdings plc, United Kingdom has matched this contribution. Educational and medical aid was provided to 35 beneficiaries affected during the Mumbai blasts. First Responder Disaster Management workshops have been launched on 10Apr07 to train citizens on do’s and don’ts during natural disasters. 100 such workshops will be conducted in 2007 to train 100 paramedics. Disaster Helpline and Centre has been established in ‘G’ North Ward. An emergency medical ambulance service for Mumbai residents – 1298 is also sponsored under this initiative.
Mumbai Floods
HSBC helped through immediate donations for relief operations to victims of Mumbai and rural Maharashtra floods in July 2005. Employees volunteered in medical camps and relief distribution in affected areas of Mumbai. HSBC has also supported SOS Children’s Villages to rehabilitate children affected by the Jammu and Kashmir earthquake in October 2005. |
