2002 title

Annapoorna K. I am very proud to be one of the first two HSBC scholars from India. HSBC has opened up a new doorway in my life. Studying and living in London is both an educative and enriching experience. It is a privilege to be a Masters student at UCL, one of the top ranking universities in the UK. Being in the hub of research activity has given me a wide-ranging exposure to different areas of research. Studies apart, London has a very active social life and it has provided me with enormous opportunities to understand a completely different culture. Being a dancer and a musician I have had the opportunity to interact with various artists in London. I even performed at the Indian Embassy's cultural wing. England is a beautiful country and I enjoyed my trip to Sheffield and Oxford away from busy London. London has its share of beautiful parks and squares and I spend my Sunday afternoons in the parks. Interacting with the HSBC in London and meeting with Sir John Bond was a memorable event. Life as an HSBC scholar will surely be one of the most cherished years in my life.

Anuj Kapilashrami The year 2002-2003 has been an extremely enriching and motivating experience in context with my brief stint at London. Having worked as a social activist in the health and/ or development sector, I decided to give a specific direction to my career in the field of Reproductive and Sexual Health Research by pursuing this course at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine- a program that would give me a deeper insight into specific health issues as well as a firm research grounding for addressing some less explored issues.

As this required considerable financial means, realization of my dreams would not have been possible without the HSBC scholarship program. The scholarship provided me with a unique opportunity to view my own work experiences in the light of a wider, international context and at the same time learn from the insights and diverse experiences of my fellow students. I also believe that through my participation, presentations and informal discussions, I was able to put across the Indian perspective and present a true picture of the ground realities.

In a nutshell, the scholarship was the key to a window of opportunities for both personal and professional development. I am taking back a deeper understanding and diverse perspectives on issues and a reinvigorated passion and drive to work towards empowerment of marginalized and socially deprived communities.
